It has never failed that when a child's response shows he is shy or wary but still interested, he perks up at the suggestion that his parent be the object of a clown routine.

Even if I have not yet entered the room (he has not given a sign that it is okay to enter his room, but has not indicated that it is not okay), I say something like ,"Mr. Billy, sir, I would like to check your father's funny bones. Is that okay with you? I will only do it with your permission. Yes, sir. I must have your permission..."

The chid is empowered. He/she eats it up.
